Is Your Dog Ready for Halloween?

Is Your Dog Ready for Halloween?

Do you have a Halloween costume picked out for your puppy? The fun isn’t just for humans – pooches can enjoy the holiday too, if you plan ahead. So, today’s question is – is your dog ready for Halloween? Here are some safety tips, costume ideas, and a funny dog video with hilarious costumes.

Dog Halloween Costume Safety Tips

Before you pick a Halloween costume for your dog, there are a few safety tips to think about.

Personality – What temperament does your dog have? If your dog is easily excited, or nervous, choose a simple costume, so they won’t get upset.

Small Parts – Be sure that the costume does not have any small pieces that could break off. Your dog could swallow those small parts, which would be a choking hazard.

Vision – If part of the costume goes on the dog’s head, make sure that it stays in place, and doesn’t cover their eyes. If your dog can’t see clearly, they could get injured.

Be Seen – For dogs that will be going outside in their costume, make sure that they can be clearly seen in their costumes. Add reflective tape to the costume, and keep them on a leash – preferably a reflective leash.

Wear ID – Halloween is an exciting time, if you take your dog trick-or-treating. Even if your dog is on a leash, they might slip away from you, in all the holiday excitement. Be sure that your dog is wearing an ID tab, with contact information.

Dog Halloween Costumes

Here are a few funny dog Halloween costumes, that I found on the Amazon site, in the Halloween Pet Supplies section. Also, see the video below, for more costume ideas (and lots of laughs).

NOTE: Be sure to check the sizes carefully, so the costume that you order will fit your dog.

Lion Mane

If you have a large dog, especially if it is light brown, or golden colour, a lion mane would be a great dog Halloween costume. It’s a simple design, and doesn’t interfere with the dog’s vision or walking.

SuperDog or Superman?

If your dog is a hero, how about a Superman costume? This one has a blue shirt with the classic S for Superman. There is a dashing red cape on the back too, so it might look like your dog is flying down the street!

Dog Costume Video

If you haven’t decided which costume to get for your dog, watch this video to get some inspiration. These are hilarious, and the laughter in the background makes the costumes even funnier.

The video gets off to a great start, with the howling dog that sounds like a fire siren. Then, at the 2:44 mark, I love the dog who’s dressed as a hot dog, and is trying to eat the shark costume that his friend is wearing.

About a minute later, another dog was wearing a cheerleader outfit, and didn’t look too impressed! The hockey goalie costume was great, and that dog didn’t let any pucks in the net. It’s hard to choose a favourite – all the costumes looked great!
