Benefits of Improv

Benefits of Improv

If you’re thinking about trying an Improv class, I highly recommend that you go ahead and just do it! The classes at The Making-Box in Guelph, Ontario have been awesome, and you can probably find classes where you live.

There isn’t anything I can type that will effectively convey the profound impact improv has had on my life.

  • The classes are fun.
  • The classes are silly.
  • The classes are two hours of celebrating the absurd.

I walked into a world where I didn’t have to wonder what people were thinking about me. I laughed with strangers until they became friends. That alone would be enough to make it worthwhile, but there’s more.

Life Changes

Slowly but surely, the principles of improv have been working their way into my life.

  • Letting go of perfectionist ideals, and celebrating mistakes.
  • Stepping forward with no clear plan, and having faith that if I listen, with my ears and my eyes,
  • I will be able to perform.
  • Allowing things to develop organically, even if it isn’t going how I expected.
  • Working with what is offered, and adapting to build on that, instead of trying to change the world to fit my vision.

Improv has made me a better man, a better father, and a better friend.

Guelph is lucky to have Jay Reid, Hayley Kellett, and The Making-Box here in town. If you haven’t been, go. If you have been, tell a friend when you’re going back and bring them with you.

The Making-Box Video

Hayley and Jay asked me to share my thoughts about improv classes, and I was happy to do that.

Here’s the short video that they made, with my comments.
