How many ways can you crush a can? September 27th is National Crush a Can Day. Nobody knows who created this holiday, but it’s a great opportunity to smash things, and get rid of some of your energy or frustrations.
To help you get started, here are a couple of videos that show some of the ways to crush a can.
Crush a Can With Science
In this first video, Steve Spangler shows how to use science to crush a can. It looks a bit dangerous, so don’t let the kids try this at home!
- First, rinse out a few soft drink cans
- Next, fill a medium sized bowl (big enough to put a can in), with cold water
- Then, put a tablespoon of water into the can – enough to cover the bottom, so add a bit more water if you need it
- Put the can on the burner of a stove, then turn the stove on, until the water starts to boil (you’ll hear it bubbling)
- Let the water boil for another minute
- Next – get ready for the dangerous part. You will use a big pair of tongs to pick up the can, turn it upside down, and plunge the top of the can into the bowl of cold water
In the video, you can see what happens – the can implodes!

Crush a Can With Feet
You can also crush a can without science. In the next video, you’ll how to smash them with your feet.
If you try this at home, be sure to wear sturdy shoes, and don’t do this on a recently polished wood floor. I’d recommend a cement floor, like the one in the garage where this video was made.
Celebrate Crush a Can Day
Which method will you use to celebrate crush a can day?
Be careful, whichever method you try – you just want to crush a can, not your skull!
