No matter how small our Christmas budget is, every year we give what we can to help other people. When you focus on giving, instead of getting things, you end up a lot happier!
Give What You Can
Every year, my daughter and I make a donation to the local food drive, and at the Christmas collection bucket in the mall. Don’t worry that you don’t have a lot to give. Even giving something small helps us focus on other people, instead of ourselves. And that’s a good thing!
And if you don’t have any cash to share with a charity, donate some of your time, if you can. Most food drives and toy drives need volunteers, so give an hour or two to help them out. It will be fun to spend time together, helping a good cause, and working with a group of charitable people from your community.
If you can’t find an organization that needs your help, think of something that you can do to help your family, friends or neighbours. Maybe somebody needs a sidewalk shoveled, or a dog needs to play at the park, or a lonely person just want to chat for a while.
Be creative, and think of ways that you can help – this holiday season can be difficult for people, so do what you can to make things better. When you focus on giving at Christmas, you’ll feel a lot better in the long run!
Dollar Store Ideas
At the Dollar Tree today, I found this activity book, called Giving Time. It really stood out among all the other books, that had pictures of elves and Santa and toys.
Nice job, Dollar Tree! Thanks for having some “giving” items for us to share with our kids. My daughter and I can work on some of the puzzles and games together, and talk about how cool it is to give.
Christmas Giving Books
There are story books too, that focus on Christmas giving, and you can find some on Amazon.
For example, here’s a book for younger kids, that talks about the power of giving: Howard B. Wigglebottom and the Power of Giving
