Do you ever go shopping for kids’ stuff? Maybe your kid needs a shirt, or a pair of pants. Or shoes – have you ever bought shoes for a kid? What about toys – kids love toys!
Find the Right Section
If you want to find any of those things for a kid, you might have to choose a section in the store.
- Do you want a shirt for a girl, or a shirt for a boy?
- Boys and girls must have different kinds of feet, because their shoes are in different sections.
- Their legs are different too, because there are girls’ pants and boys’ pants.
And toys are gender based too, even if the signs in that section aren’t as clear as they were a few years ago.
- There are several aisles with pink, frilly, glittery, soft toys. Who are those for?
- The next few aisles have dark, scary, weapon-filled, action toys. Hmmmm. Who is supposed to play with those?
Jay Says Stop
Here are my Sunday thoughts on stuff for kids.
Stop putting it in sections! Why can’t we take the boys & girls sections in stores, mix them up a bit, and just call it the kids section?
- Pink shirts, and frills, and glittery things aren’t just for girls.
- Blue pants, and danger, and action toys aren’t just for boys.
For example, here’s a photo of me, about 6 years old. I think that’s He Man, and the Masters of the Universe, on my sweat shirt. Also I’m proudly wearing glittery tinsel on my head, and around my neck. An excellent fashion statement for the holidays – or any day!
No Kid is Weird
No kid should feel weird about what they want to wear. Or the toys they want to play with. No store should tell them those things are for somebody else, by putting things in gender-based sections.
Yes, it might be little harder to find what you’re looking for, in a Kids’ section, with pink and blue and glitter and action figures.
But it might be a little easier for little people to find themselves.
And that’s the important thing. For all of us.
